Avionics

The electronic systems used on aircrafts, artificial satellites and spacecraft are known as avionics. The avionics systems comprise of communications, navigation, the display and management of multiple systems and the hundreds of other systems that are a part of the aircraft and perform their functions individually and as a part of system too. These functions can be as simple and small as a cabin light for airplane and could be as complication as the tactical system for an airborne early warning platform.History of Avionics
A journalist, Philip J. Klass came up with the term avionics as a combined name for aviation and electronics. Many of the modern avionics can be traced back to World War II Wartime Development when need for modern equipment was badly felt and engineers came up with brilliant ideas.  Autopilot system is one such invention as it was helped the bomber planes fly steadily while enabling the pilot to hit their targets even from high altitudes. Similarly, radar was developed in the UK and Germany and United States about the same time to keep a tab on enemy planes.Modern avionics is a very crucial part of the military and a substantial portion of budget intended for jets is spent on avionics. According to estimates, almost 60 percent of the overall budget goes into avionics.Not only this, but the civilian market has also seen a rapid increase in the cost of avionics. Flight control systems and new and better navigation needs have raised the development costs. Along with this, the boom in airline business has also made airplanes a primary mode of transportation and this has resulted in better and more advanced methods of aircraft safety which has increased the demand and need of avionics.Role of Avionics in Current Times
Avionics is playing a key role in the current times. Initiatives like the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Next Generation Air Transportation System project in the United States and the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) initiative in Europe are proof that more importance is being given to avionics and it can play a crucial role in aircraft safety.Along with this, avionics is very substantial for modernization of aircraft industry. The Joint Planning and Development Office has defined its role in six areas for the coming times.


  • Published Routes and Procedures – Improving and redefining navigation and routing
  • Negotiated Trajectories – Adding data communications to create preferred routes dynamically
  • Delegated Separation – Enhancing situational awareness in the air as well as on the ground
  • LowVisibility/CeilingApproach/Departure – Allowing operations with weather constraints with less ground infrastructure
  • Surface Operations –Increasing safety in approach and departure
  • ATM Efficiencies – Improving the ATM process
